emc-emi testing

In addition to our Round Rock and Marble Falls locations, PTI acquired a new facility in the heart of one of Austin's established high tech districts in spring of 2006. Although our Round Rock facility offers a complete range of EMC testing and EMI testing, our Austin facility will feature a 10-meter indoor Semi-Anechoic chamber. With this addition, our emissions testing can be performed in minutes verses hours. As an additional advantage, when used for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC testing), this chamber enables measurements for both emissions and immunity requirements in one location. This will qualify us as one of the top indoor testing facilities in the world.

Selecting the right standards is a critical first step in the process of achieving worldwide compliance for your products. PTI's unparalleled international experience can help get your product accepted around the globe in a cost effective, timely manner.

Emissions Testing

The Emissions test measures the amount of high frequency energy the product is emitting into free space. This unwanted energy could cause harmful interference in numerous ways, for example, with radio communication. Our emissions tests are broken into two types: conducted and radiated emissions.

Some of the key emissions test standards that we test to include:

  • MIL-STD
  • RTCA DO-160
  • SAE
  • FCC Part 15 Radio Frequency Devices
  • FCC Part 18 Industrial, Scientific, and Medical Equipment
  • FCC Part 22 Cellular Radio Service
  • FCC Part 24 Personal Communication Services
  • FCC Part 90 Private Land Mobile Radio Services
  • FCC Part 95 Personal Radio Service
  • AS/NZS 3548 Australia/New Zealand ITE
  • AS/NZS 2064.1/2 Australia/New Zealand ISM
  • EN61000-6-3 Generic Emissions Light Industry
  • EN61000-6-4 Generic Emissions Heavy Industry
  • EN55011 Group I or II, Class A or B
  • EN55022 Class A or B
  • EN61000-3-2, EN61000-3-3 Harmonic Distortion
  • VCCI Japanese Standard for Control of ITE Intf.
  • BMSI Taiwan

Immunity Testing

The Immunity tests are performed to determine a product's susceptibility when exposed to a high RF field or conducted disturbances. Immunity/Susceptibility tests are performed in accordance with countries and/or government agencies requirements to determine if the product continues to perform properly when subjected to various electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) upsets and fields.

We are able to ensure compliance for your products by measuring across a wide range of tests, including:

  • EN61000-4-2 Electrostatic Discharge
  • EN61000-4-3 Radiated Immunity
  • EN61000-4-4 EFT/Burst Immunity
  • EN61000-4-5 Surge Immunity
  • EN61000-4-6 Conducted Immunity
  • EN61000-4-8 Magnetic Field Immunity
  • EN61000-4-11 Voltage Dips/Interruptions

Our immunity tests are automated around the Quantum Change EMC Total Integrated Laboratory Environment (TILE™) system is designed to be an extremely flexible, general instrument control software system with integrated links to various word processing, database and spreadsheet software.

Certain products call for a different route to certification. Products not applicable to any one standard or having a large number of configurations are open to another method of product compliance involving a technical construction file (TCF). PTI can construct the TCF and pass it on to a partnering competent or notified body located overseas in the European Union.

Calibration

PTI has carefully developed a facility for calibrating your specialized instruments. Our goals in doing this have been technical accuracy and quick turnaround. Our procedures are based on industry standards and the equipment used to perform calibrations is stored separately and used for that purpose only. Also, the equipment calibration is traceable through National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Calibration: It is extremely important to have these instruments calibrated regularly. However, it is very expensive it is to ship a heavy, delicate Surge generator or an EFT generator to a lab on the other side of the continent. Wouldn't it be easier to have them calibrated locally? Examples of the equipment we calibrate include:

  • ESD Guns
  • EFT Generators
  • Surge Generators
  • RF Current Clamps
  • Antennas
  • RF Cables
  • RF Attenuators
  • Amplifiers

If your testing lab is located in the Southwest and you can't afford any downtime, you may also want to talk with us about on-site calibration services. We can bring the equipment and the skills to you, and help you meet your testing commitments on time and on schedule. Remember, when your EMC equipment needs calibration, you can call PTI.
